[Event] New Dublin WooCommerce Meetup to Bring Woo-Entrepreneurs Together

Wikipedia states “WooCommerce is an open source e-commerce plugin for WordPress. [..]  Launched on September 27, 2011,[3] the plugin quickly became famous for its simplicity to install and customisation and being free in nature. [..] In May 2015, WooThemes and WooCommerce were acquired by Automattic, operator of WordPress.com and core contributor to the WordPress software. [..] For the 2nd week of March 2015, Trends indicated that WooCommerce ran on 24% of e-commerce sites online with total downloads reaching 6.7 million.”

But as a Woo-lover and Woo-developer, numbers don’t really mean much. The more entrepreneurs I meet in town, the more website owners I speak to, the more social media addicts I “talk” to, WooCommerce is sure to become the biggest provider of Ecommerce functionalities in the next few months.

Automattic, the company behind WordPress, has just acquired WooCommerce, included its worldwide staff of 50+ people, for an amount that is close to $30,000,000. Now, that is what you call an investment!

With 7million downloads worldwide, we’ve decided to start a Dublin WooCommerce Meetup.

Upcoming WooCommerce Meetup: 12 August

The first event saw approximately 25 entrepreneurs attending, all from different backgrounds (web designers, developers, ecommerce entrepreneurs, WordPress enthusiasts). Realex Payments kindly sponsored venue and….. drum roll… free drinks!

Good news is – we’re running our WooCommerce Meetups every 2nd Wednesday of the month, in Dublin 2 (and specifically in the Dublin Chamber of Commerce, 7 Clare Street).

Or next appointment is on Aug 12th (RSVP here by Aug 11). We’ll discuss:

  • best practices for WooCommerce/WordPress website hosting
  • hosting platforms: who is using what, for how much, and what the feedback is
  • website speed: hosting and caching plugin recommendations
  • backing up and security: tips and suggestions to keep our websites secure and 99% hack-proof

Why is this WooCommerce Meetup important to me?

The main obstacle being faced by web developers, graphic designers and website owners is… TIME.

You would agree with me if I said WooCommerce is easy and fast, however this only applies to basic ecommerce functionalities. There are hundreds of free and premium plugins, thousands of themes, millions of PHP snippets available to accomplish advanced tasks.

So, TIME is money and we wish we had some extra hours a day to run the whole process smoothly!

This month, we’ll discuss openly about hosting providers, hosting plans, website speed, backup and restore planning and whatever is related to the best practices of “starting with the right foot“.

If you charge a considerable amount of money to develop WooCommerce websites, or if you’re investing in your next WooCommerce website, it’s extremely important to select the best hosting options before starting with the development.

When is the next Dublin WooCommerce Meetup on?

Happy Woo-Entrepreneurs of Dublin while enjoying their Free Drinks On July 8th

Happy Woo-Entrepreneurs of Dublin while enjoying their Free Drinks On July 8th

As already mentioned, we’ll be meeting in the Dublin Chamber of Commerce at 8pm on August 12th.

We asked Blacknight, Letshost, SpiralHost, Digiweb and other companies to attend so we’ll see if they’re brave enough to attend and answer our questions!

For sure, there will be myself, recently appointed WooCommerce Meetup Organiser by WooThemes/Automattic, and several other entrepreneurs such as website owners, designers and developers. In the first event, 2 great guys drove down from Cork to attend – so there is really no excuse if you live in Dublin!

To register (it’s free of course, plus Realex Payments will get you a free drink afterwards!), visit http://www.meetup.com/Dublin-WooCommerce-Meetup/events/223649210 now.

Hope to see you there!

[Event] Learn Inbound – A Digital Marketing Event that delivers

Marketing is changing to meet the wants of users just like you. Inbound marketing shifts the focus from talking at people to a point that they simply tune out, to providing people with something that they genuinely value and enjoy. It focuses on providing solutions to problems, saving time or money and causing them to have a positive emotional reaction. When done effectively it converts people to become loyal customers who see your brand as one that can help solve their problems.

As technology improves and we gain more options in what media we consume and how we consume it, the world around us changes. As we adapt to these changes, our expectations and demands change dramatically. We’re watching fewer television commercials and moving towards ad free on demand services, we’re opening less direct mail and instead looking to communicate directly with brands on the channels we choose and we’re blocking more ads than ever before as we browse our favourite websites. As this type of behavioural change increases, it has pushed the cost of traditional advertising even higher while making the benefits of inbound marketing, providing users with relevant and helpful information at the right time, even stronger.

Why is it important for me?

User behavioural changes are already well underway, we don’t consume data or use technology as we used to. The algorithms that control search ranking, social promotion or paid advertising are picking up on the changes there and actively promoting the content that’s providing the best user experience, or at least continually trying to. The question now is how long it will take businesses to catch up.

According to The Second UPC Report on Ireland’s Digital Future, Irish online consumer spending was estimated to be in the region of €5.9 billion. Of this, more than 60% (~€3.6 billion) is being spent abroad. The report alarmingly estimates that fewer than one in four small Irish businesses (24%) have the ability to conduct online sales, meaning there is no Irish competition for those billions leaving the country. With all estimates pointing to online spending more than doubling by 2020, the stakes are only going to get higher.

How can Learn Inbound help?

The main obstacle being faced by businesses is how to address the current problems. Many wish to sell online, many wish to export through their sites but they simply don’t know where to start or how to execute it. Others have started and are now looking to expand their reach and improve their performance. In either case, education is the vital first step.

Research carried out recently by HubSpot and Smart Insights collected data from over 700 content marketers across Europe. When asked to rate their content marketing capabilities, 68% rated themselves at basic or inconsistent. Over half of those surveyed (51%) said that they found the measurement of their effectiveness a real challenge and only 39% claimed they were able to measure return on investment from their work. In spite of these challenges, only 3% were sceptical of the value of their marketing efforts.

Learn Inbound brings together an active community of business owners and marketing professionals, all of whom tackle these issues on a daily basis just like you. Leading industry experts come in to outline tactics and strategies, with case studies and technical details on execution, to help improve efficiencies and performance. Providing detailed technical talks with the benefits of peer review and discussion with an active and engaged community helps improve information retention and ensures the events stay fun and relaxed. That’s also helped a little with a free bar and some snacks to help you keep up with the fast pace of the evenings.

If you’d like to learn more, do check out the free videos available from earlier events. There’s a wealth of digital marketing advice on the site and these topics will continue to grow and expand in the future.

When is the next Learn Inbound on?

The next event is on the 21st of October in The Academy, Dublin. We’re delighted to welcome to Ireland Rand Fishkin of Moz, Elizaveta Lavrienko of SEMrush, Wil Reynolds of SEER Interactive, Gianluca Fiorelli of ILoveSEO.net and Bas van den Beld of State of Digital. The demand for this event is already huge and we’re sure it’ll be a sell out well in advance. If you’re interested in joining the community for the night and spending time with some of the shining stars of inbound marketing just jump over to the Learn Inbound event page to save your seat.

These events really are all about the marketing community and all about you. If you’ve any thoughts, ideas or suggestions for the team here we’d love to hear from you and discuss them.

InterTradeIreland Event Provides Insight into Complex Public Procurement Market

More than 600 local SMEs attended the recent InterTradeIreland Meet the Buyer event in Belfast to find out how they could be better placed to tap into the lucrative public procurement market, which is worth £2.8bn in Northern Ireland and €8.5bn in the south.  Both markets continue to offer substantial opportunities for small businesses, despite the decreases in public spending.

Public Procurement: Consortia can open doors

With recent changes to procurement practices by governments North and South, resulting in increasingly larger contracts being issued, delegates heard how it is now more important than ever for companies to consider forming consortia to bid for tenders.  This may seem daunting at first, but there is support available.

Government support

Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister, Jonathan Bell, who opened the event, emphasised that there are extensive opportunities available through government contracts, highlighting that a significant proportion of these contracts will be awarded to SMEs – a key commitment within the current Programme for Government.

SMEs – an innovative approach

SMEs are well suited to helping public sector buyers find new and innovative solutions. This event presented the perfect opportunity for businesses to better understand buyers’ needs and for local companies to improve their capabilities with regards to the tendering support that is available. It is vital for our economy that we have a truly joined-up approach to make tendering as accessible as possible to businesses of all sizes.

Popular events

The Meet the Buyer events are oversubscribed every year as they offer firms the unique opportunity to get directly in front of the key buyers from public organisations across the island including CPD in NI and OGP in Ireland, along with the likes of Translink, DRD Roads Service, NI Water, RTÉ, Dublin Airport Authority and ESB Networks.

Support available for complex process

Tendering can be a complex process but more InterTradeIreland supports are in place to help small businesses than ever before so that they can increase their chances of being successful.  One example of this is providing access to our dedicated ‘consortia facilitator’ to help companies ‘find’ each other.

Tendering success is encouraging

According to InterTradeIreland’s latest Business Monitor survey, over the last year, of the SMEs active in the public tendering market 31% have bid on a cross-border tender, of those that bid cross border, encouragingly 69% of these were successful. A sign that these opportunities are accessible to all – with the right support.

Global opportunities beckon

With an all-island value of £10 billion, local tendering success can also be a stepping stone to other markets with even more significant public purchasing power, such as GB and Europe.  Our Business Monitor figures highlight that there has been a significant increase in those bidding successfully for cross-border tenders, which confirms that this is a route to new business that cannot be ignored.

Meet the Buyer

The event was held in partnership with the Central Procurement Directorate (CPD) in NI; The Office of Government Procurement (OGP) in Ireland, Invest NI, the Strategic Investment Board and Enterprise Ireland.

A range of tendering supports

InterTradeIreland offers the following range of supports:

  • Meet the Buyer Events: Access key public sector buyers on the island under one roof.
  • Go-2-Tender Workshops: 2 day workshops providing SMEs, whether new to tendering or wanting to enhance their knowledge, with tender skills and insights.
  • Consortia Facilitator Service: Providing advice and facilitation to companies looking to form joint bids.
  • Tender Apps & Alerts: Automatic updates on the latest tenders direct to your mobile phone through Apple or Android Tender Apps.
  • Information & Guides: All the information you need to help you tender more successfully.

Dream Big, Win Big at #IBYE 2015

The Search is on for 93 of Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneurs.

Through Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur competition (#IBYE), over 90 people aged between 18 and 30 will win €10,000 – €20,000 to invest in their own businesses in Ireland this year.

That lump sum can buy that new piece of equipment you need; it can pay the salary of a new employee joining the team or it can fund that marketing campaign that will help your business expand into new markets.

Last year, Philip Martin used his prize money to buy specialist machinery, helping him to open Ireland’s first tortilla-making factory in Tipperary (Winner: Best Business Idea).

The money also helped Eamon Keane take on highly skilled staff at Xpreso Software in South Dublin (Winner: Best Start Up Business/ Overall Winner). And it came in very handy when Dean Gammell from Westmeath was expanding his group booking software business into the UK (Winner: Best Established Business).

Every Local Enterprise Office (LEO) around the country has €50,000 (each) to invest in three local businesses and start-ups – and with 31 LEOs, that bring the total number of winners to 93. Each local winner will get an injection of cash between €10,000 and €20,000 to put straight into their business.

And that’s just the start!

Up to 500 young entrepreneurs and business owners will also be invited to take part in Business Bootcamps around the country, helping them finely tune their business plans or learn new enterprise skills. One-to-one mentoring and business coaching will also be available, through all 31 LEOs.

To be in with a chance to win, complete the entry form through the IBYE website on-line. But hurry, the deadline to enter this year’s competition is July 31st 2015.

There are some competition terms and conditions (you have to be aged between 18 and 30 for a start and your business idea or existing business must be in Ireland), but if you don’t try, you can’t win!

So, why not ‘Dream Big and Win Big’ at #IBYE 2015!

See more about #IBYE here on YouTube

(#IBYE is completely free to enter and is part of the Action Plan for Jobs 2015. It is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through Enterprise Ireland and the Local Enterprise Offices http://www.ibye.ie)

Ulster Bank helps STEM sector

The Northern Ireland Executive’s has recognised that the future success of the Northern Ireland economy will require increased numbers of skilled workers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) qualifications. A STEM business group was set up in 2013 to examine how businesses can inspire young people, male and female to consider careers in these sectors and help address the gender balance. The group comprises of companies and education centres such as QUB, UUJ, Norbrook, Schrader Electronics, All State, Citibank.

The STEM Sector

Karen Lawther and Shauna Burns from Ulster Bank were invited to speak at the Belfast STEM Employers Equality Networking in Malone House on 10th June, to discuss the topic of networking and how Ulster Bank uses its internal network, Women In Touch and its external network, BusinessWomenCan to help address the gender balance in the business community.

Karen Lawther, Ulster Bank’s Head of Markets NI spoke about Women in Touch which Ellvena Graham started in 2010. This network was featured as a good practice case study in the STEM Business subgroup’s report Addressing Gender Balance-Reaping the Gender Dividend in STEM. The aim of this internal network is to support women in managerial roles to network, share experiences, learn from each other and realise their potential.

The WIT network offers Ulster Bank employees the opportunity to develop and advance their careers, becoming involved in activities that challenge and inspire them.

Participants then discussed the benefits of networks and the speakers kindly shared their expertise in answering members’ questions.

Climate launchpad, your children and 36 trillion

Climate launchpad

Two months ago we started the Climate Launchpad programme. A programme that covers 26 countries across Europe and the largest pre-accelerator in the world in the area of green and clean tech.

Entrepreneurs will have to do it

The idea behind Climate Launchpad is that if we wait for governments to tackle the climate change issues, we be waiting until the cows come home. It will be the entrepreneurs that will have to do it. By creating sustainable businesses that have a positive climate impact.

Our babies have grown up

We have worked with a number of ideas over the last two months and eight of my babies have grown up and are pitching their ideas this Monday. You are invited to see how they are doing. You can book your ticket here.

Eye opener

The programme opened my eyes. We are running out of time. If you follow the graphs on carbon emission and the consequent increase in temperature our kids will be living in Kevin Costner’s Waterworld. It is not fair to leave them with our mess.

Huge business opportunity

It is also a billion dollar business opportunity. By 2050, 36 trillion will be  invested in this sector. Over 310 billion has been invested in green energy in 2014. A perfect hotspot and a perfect combination of transformation, entrepreneurship and opportunity.

It will become the norm

In my view green and clean tech does not cover it. It is sustainable entrepreneurship or business 4.0. It is not only tech. It is food, it is people, it is waste, it is energy, it is attitude and it is everywhere and soon sustainability as part of your business model will be as normal as e-commerce. We don’t use “e-” any more. It is the norm.

If we don’t, we will drown. It is as simple as that.

The babies

  • Agri Grow Lights is a state-of-the-art solution that, by controlling the light spectrum from LED lights, food producers can increase the nutritious content of crops.
  • Boltz Secret Seeds are seedbombs enhanced with biochar. They are a platform to encourage people to garden at home, locally produce fruit & flowers and make a great occasion gift.
  • Climate Friendly Design is the world’s first digital governance platform designed to challenge, analyse and validate energy efficient design for buildings, processes and investment funds.
  • EMMA is an emergency mobile alert tool with great life-saving potential for communities vulnerable to natural disasters.
  • E. E. S. is a Home Energy Improvement Simulator tool that informs the homeowner about their current and modelled dwelling energy use.
  • Marker Bio-fuel is focusing on the rapidly developing resource-recovery market to produce second generation bio-diesel for the agricultural market, and also to develop a bio-refinery to produce 1,3 Propanediol (PDO) from the by-product glycerine.
  • wasteNOT is a  combination of innovative labelling, ICT and a smart phone app that will automatically maintain an inventory of current food by expiry date and send push notifications of food that needs eating with suggested recipes
  • UniQube is developing a new approach to tackle the current urban housing crisis. UniQube use a modular construction (off site) approach to build urban apartment complexes using container architecture (recycled shipping containers) as the building blocks.

I hope to see you on Monday and hopefully it will open your eyes too.
