Marrying Online and Offline Marketing Efforts for Success

As the world becomes increasingly dominated by the internet, more and more businesses are turning to online-only techniques to turn interested consumers into clients or customers. Newspapers and radio, the two main avenues for off-line advertising in the past, are dwindling and network TV is close on their heels.

But as the Internet continues to grow, evolve, and change, the effectiveness of both on-and-offline marketing campaigns are fluid. In fact, many current marketers may be surprised to learn that most effective approach is an integrated one, where online and off-line advertising work in tandem, converting more often than either one on its own.

An Integrated Approach

Did you know that graphic ads such as billboards and even business cards can be used to drive both organic and direct traffic to your website? According to Levy Online, a Vegas-based marketing agency, the increased recognition from billboards and television ads can provide a huge boost to branded Google searches, leading clients directly to your product or service. A prime example of this is local attorney Adam S. Kutner. Despite an incredibly saturated and competitive local market, Kutner has built online success by investing in offline ads.

Although these types of brand-building mediums differ greatly in reach and size, they share a common goal: getting eyes on your website. They should be eye-catching and give just enough information to entice people to look for more information. No one sees a billboard or picks up a business card and instantly signs a contract or makes a purchase. Consumers need time to feel comfortable with a company or professional individual before they open their wallets.

The vast majority of consumers have mobile devices with them most of the time, which provides the perfect opportunity for them to look for more information immediately. A billboard that prominently displays the website address will encourage the viewer to pick up their phone or tablet – hopefully not while driving – and get more information about what the company has to offer. A simple business card can contain a printed QR code that makes it even easier for them to find their way to your company’s site.

Radio and TV Still Potent Channels

Television shows, movies and music will never disappear as forms of entertainment for the general public (though the landscape may be shifting, with Netflix and Hulu carving out a substantial niche.) Buying ad time and put your name in front of millions of people at the same time. With a professionally crafted presentation, people should be inspired to take action based on its content. This will require a bit of an investment, both in high caliber video production and buying ad time.

The ads placed on TV or radio also need particular goals. While some companies may promote a particular product or service, most want to establish a long-term relationship with the customer or client. This allows them to sell multiple times to the same person. Using these spots to point people to the website or social media page online helps to build this type of trust and familiarity.

With so many options available to the modern marketer, integrating online and offline advertising makes sense. Not only do real-world ads, such as billboards and television commercials helps the general public recognize your company and develop a positive attitude toward it, but they can greatly increase the amount of traffic coming to your online sites. By formulating a cohesive goal, marketing techniques as divergent as a billboard and a scannable QR code can work together and lead to success.

7 Techniques to Improve Content Writing Skills

It doesn’t matter whether you use infographics, videos, photos, graphs, or any other type of materials to add flare to your content; you are mostly counting on words as the main means that connects you with readers. If you don’t get that part right, it will be impossible for you to achieve success as a blogger, freelance writer, or content marketer. Let’s look at some effective ways you can improve content writing skills and thus drive more traffic to your website.

Try researching a particular topic online and you’ll come to a devastating conclusion: most of the articles you run into will be poorly written. Everyone tries to be a writer nowadays. This is how you can turn that fact to your advantage: when a reader locates a great blog, he decides to stick with that reliable resource. Now is your time to attract more regular readers by publishing superb content! These 7 techniques will help you improve your writing skills.

Focus on spelling, grammar, and syntax

It doesn’t matter whether you prefer conversational or advanced style; your readers won’t respect you if you write mediocre content full of flaws. If you are looking for the most important technique that will boost the quality of your articles, this is the one: start with the foundations of your language. When you start writing strong, convincing sentences, you’ll instantly gain more authority.

Try impulsive writing

When you write for living, this activity can easily turn into a habit that will numb the enthusiasm you used to feel. Impulsive writing may be the solution. Allow yourself the luxury of neglecting your schedule for a day (of course, you shouldn’t choose the moment when you’re expected to submit an especially important project). Observe your feelings. Watch the news and get frustrated about the twisted reality. Dig deep and turn all emotions into text. Write whatever comes to your mind. Don’t feel obliged to publish this anywhere; it’s just an exercise that serves to remind you why you love writing in the first place.

Master other skills

Writing cannot be your only interest. You need something to write about, don’t you? All successful writers need to explore different niches until they find their calling. Do you like cooking? Maybe you’re interested in medicine, society, psychology, or parenting? Become an expert! If you have various interests, you don’t have to pick a single one. You can develop multiple “mini skills” that will make you a more versed author. However, you should make sure to surpass the limits of superficial, mainstream knowledge in the niches you explore.

Use online tools!

Content writers need to rely on technology in order to achieve their full potential. Start exploring these 5 tools and you’ll notice a dramatic improvement in your productiveness:

Portent’s Content Idea Generator gives you different suggestions for a title, based on the subject you enter. The ideas are really cool! You don’t have to copy the actual title; you can easily modify it according to your style and the readers’ preferences.

Essaymama.com will save you in times of trouble. You started working on a topic that’s more challenging than you anticipated? Rely on the expert writers and editors at this website; they can help you complete awesome content regardless of the volume of knowledge you currently posses. Don’t forget to read the glossary of essay terms, as well as the essay writing guide. Some skills in academic writing will only make you a more believable content writer.

Thesaurus helps you fight your greatest enemy – repetitiveness. Find synonyms that will replace your habit words, and your style will immediately gain appeal.

ProWritingAid is a great tool to use during the editing stage. The software will help you improve the readability of your content and eliminate the errors that were unnoticed by MS Word or Google Docs.

Help.PlagTracker will provide you with editing and proofreading assistance so you may not worry anymore if your content is accurate and correct.

Discover your unique voice

Online content writers often copy or paraphrase content we’ve all seen before. Fortunately, that’s not the strategy that brings more readers your way. A true writer never copies someone else. You surely have your individual style, strong opinions and distinct personality. Express them! Find your voice, and your readers will soon start recognizing you for it.

Now you might wonder: how do you discover your voice? That’s a fair question, and there’s only one answer to it: practice! Think, feel, and write! You won’t even notice how your style is starting to take its true form.

Research, research, research!

This stage never stops. You’re lucky, since it’s the most awesome part of your work. You get to learn new things every day, and not many people have a chance to commit to self-development. Research is not an activity you do before you start writing a particular article. You should constantly discover new things and take notes of all ideas you get. Your creative mind never stops working. Use its entire potential and feed it with more information!

Get rid of the fillers!

You tend to write long posts that restate the same arguments over and over again? You need to make a change! If you can prove a point in 200 words, don’t aim for 1000! Your readers don’t like wasting their time; they want to get the information they need as quickly and as clearly as possible.

Online Reviews: How Your Customers Can Help Your Business

Getting the internet to recognise your business seems like a never ending rat race. You update the content on your website frequently, yet you have to dig through the depths of Google or Bing to find your site. People rarely go that far into search results because they usually choose a business listed on the first page. So how do you make it to that coveted position?

By having an effective local SEO strategy, your business can garner the attention you seek. Through quality content, choice keywords and phrases, and strong social signals, your site can go from page “nowhere” to page 1 of the search results in a matter of months. One of the more time sensitive – but equally important –  aspects of this campaign is acquiring online reviews.

Where To Review

Depending on your type of business, there are several places where customers can review you. Google (and other search engines) and Yelp are the more well known review sources. TripAdvisor and Trustpilot are a couple others. Of course, customers are able to leave reviews on social media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

You can use all or a couple of these, it’s really up to you to determine which ones are most relevant for your business. For instance, a beauty salon owner in Bristol may use Google, Yelp, and Facebook as her main online review sources, but a restaurant owner uses TripAdvisor in addition to those. Someone who owns a web based business could rely solely on Google, Facebook, and Trustpilot. Whilst a builder may focus more on FreeIndex, MyBuilder or Rated People.

The important this here is relevance, especially as a listing on some of these niche sites may actually cost you money. Ask yourself “Do my target market use and are they influenced by this site?”

How To Get Reviews

There are a couple of methods to go about obtaining online reviews from customers, but before you go that far, you’ll need to set up accounts with the review forums of your choice. Each forum has different setup procedures, but – fortunately –  most are free to businesses.

As far as getting reviews, you can either take a passive, semi-passive, or “full charge” approach.

  1. By being passive, you basically play a game of wait-and-see. Customers are left to their own devices when reviewing your business because you give them no direction.
  2. A semi-passive approach requires you to give some direction by leaving cues strategically placed around your site and business. This could take the form of signs by the cash register, on receipts, and clickable buttons on your website.
  3. The “full charge” approach means you prompt customers to review your business, and, possibly, give them incentives in exchange (some review forums actively discourage this method (Yelp) so be careful).

The approach we encourage our clients to take is to actively encourage reviews. Make it part of your customer service routine to regularly follow up with clients. Were they happy with the service / product they received? If yes, offer them links direct to your review listing. If not, then here’s a chance to fix it. We wouldn’t recommend you incentivise anyone to leave a review.

Pros and Cons of Online Reviews

As with anything related to public opinion, there’s bound to be some criticism. Any business is susceptible to negative reviews regardless of how well it’s managed, and yours is no different. Luckily, the benefits of online reviews outweigh this con. Aside from being a local ranking factor, reviews build trust and credibility with your customers.

If you’re asking your customers to leave reviews on your Google My Business page, once you’ve reached 5 reviews your listing will start to display 5 stars underneath. A great way to help your result stand out against competitors and has been shown to significantly increase click through rate.Local SEO Bristol

Google My Business: Essential for Small Business

Google is known for its innovation and experimental nature, and one has to admire how readily they take risks and how daring their initiatives are. Google Reader and Google Glass aimed to change the world and the Driverless Car isn’t far behind – but whether they hit the mark or not, Google keeps persevering. Some of the best minds in the world work for Google, and it’s because of this, that services such as Ad Sense and Gmail even exist. The reason for writing all this is because one of Google’s vast successes that is standing the test of time in a warp-speed world, is Google Maps. To get your business on Google Maps you must sign up to Google My Business.

How it Works

The main way to ensure you are as visible as possible on Google Maps is to fill out the Google My business profile completely and ensure every box is filled – don’t rush it. Boring advice, but oh so necessary.

Additionally, I have seen reports that seem to suggest local search (i.e. search in your local area) is getting more like the rest of search (search in the wider world), making generating online activity and topical conversation around your chosen locations key.

Reviews

From what I’ve seen, reviews are one of the key differentiators in how visible your maps listing is as a small business. One of the benefits of running a smaller company is a shorter chain of command and closer contact with clients themselves. Asking your clients to review you on Google Maps and give you a testimonial for your website is, in my opinion one of the best things you can do. People look at reviews now more than ever, and maps listings with reviews do tend to be significantly more visible.

Recent Results

To demonstrate the value of reviews, a client of mine recently went from 25 reviews to 35 reviews on their Google Maps page. Firstly, I can see their maps visibility has risen significantly when searching for key topics around their offering on the Google Maps engine. Secondly, they have enjoyed a 45% increase in views to over 4,000… in the last 30 days alone.

Re-Verification

Now for a bit of current news; Google recently sent out Maps re-verifications for Google Business listings (Google Business is the umbrella term that Google Maps now sits under). If you receive or have received one of these for your small businesses existing listing, do re-verify it – you don’t want to miss out on being seen and your listing could be removed.

Old School Tactics

A lot of blogs on optimising Google Maps talk about the usual actions you should take so I won’t go into detail, but they include the following:

  • Promotion: Use your website to promote your local listing in addition to your email communications. You can see on one of ours here we have links to both Google+ and a neat Google Maps map on our website. Old school tactic but I believe it adds value.
  • NAP (Name, Address and Phone Number): Keep these consistent and the same for both your website and Google Maps listing so the two marry up.
  • Offers: Rather than directly increasing visibility, posting offers can serve to drive activity… and sales.
  • Location: Putting the correct locations on your listing is vital as people often search on Google using location – make sure the locations match those on your website too.

For the small business, I honestly think Google Maps is one of the best resources out there – and of course – it’s free to all!

Are You Doomed to Fail?

On the 5th of November Alan Jordan and Ron Immink will go on stage and deliver the log awaited Bookbuzz MBA in a day.

You can still book here.

The Network Always Wins

At Bookbuzz we are huge fans of Peter Hinssen. “The new normal” was one of our anchor books for quite a while.

We have been looking forward to his second book and it does not disappoint. It will become another anchor books in our stable when we work with clients.

VUCA

It touches on a 3 core topics that our clients are struggling with; VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity), innovation and organisational structures.

Are you doomed to fail?

We can safely say that some of the largest corporations are totally clueless about where to go next, suffer from horrible internal politics and inert boardroom cultures, and have given up the hope of transforming their bureaucracies. Companies are no longer smart enough, fast enough, or innovative enough to survive on their own.

New Normal

In “New Normal”, Hinssen talked about how digital will transform everything. That ship has now sailed. The consequence of digital is that everything gets connected. Which means that everything is networked. Once everything is networked, a lot of things happen. Everything goes faster and network dynamics come into play. Which brings you into the realm of complex adaptive systems.

Networks make things complex (and faster)

Information, intelligence and innovation flow fast through networks. The dynamics in the era of networks seem to be very close to the world of complex adaptive systems structures and organisms found in nature. The key to understanding complex adaptive networks is to focus on understanding the nature of the connections, the strength of the relationships, and the intensity of the information flow in a network.

  • Complex systems don’t have a master plan—they evolve, they emerge
  • Complex systems are built on connectivity.
  • Complexity arises from the interrelationship, interaction, and interconnectivity of all the elements within a system and between a system and its environment.R
  • Complex systems evolve in coevolution.
  • A complex system exists within an environment, but it is part of that environment.
  • Complex systems are not perfect. They are suboptimal.
  • A complex adaptive system does not have to be perfect in order to thrive within its environment.
  • Complex systems are not designed for optimal efficiency, but are based on the concept of perfect enough.
  • Complex systems favour variety and diversity. The greater the amount of variety and diversity within the system, the stronger that system can become.
  • Complex systems are self-organising. There is no hierarchy of command and control in a complex adaptive system.
  • Complex systems evolve on the edge of chaos.

Culture is too slow

A while ago we wrote a post, talking about culture being too slow and that organisational structure is the key to success. Hinssen brings it a lot further then that. You need to become fluid. Fluid strategy, fluid people, fluid organisation. Using network dynamics, the theory of relativity, adaptive and complex system theory, biology, cities, religion (Shiva), Schumpeter (creative destruction), silicon valley, start ups, Taleb (anti-fragile) and entropy.

Become fluid

The key message; the static structures of today will have to be reinvented for the age of fluidity. To deal with VUCA we will have to learn the aerodynamics of the era of networks, and understand how to build organisations that can thrive in a world that speeds up. Companies will have to get in touch with their inner innovation networks, understand how to turn them into fluidity, and avoid becoming rigid corporate structures. If your market is a network, you need to become a network. A fluid, networked, flat, agile organisation.

Anchor book

The reason it will become a Bookbuzz anchor book in our sessions with clients, is because it touched on so many books we have covered:

Generation N

He classifies the millennial not as generation Einstein, Y, E, Z or G (=gaming, those for whom the world is too slow), but generation N. The networked generation.

So what do you need to do?

Network

If your markets are turning into networks, your organisation needs to turn into a network. The hierarchical network is the least important network. In a world of six degrees of separation, nobody care about your title, they care about what you do.

Vacine

You need to apply VACINE

  • velocity
  • agility
  • creativity
  • innovation
  • network
  • experimentation

You need to fail forward

Failure is a manifestation of learning and exploration. If you aren’t experiencing failure, then you are making a far worse mistake: you are being driven by the desire to avoid it. And, for leaders especially, this strategy—trying to avoid failure by outthinking it—dooms you to fail. It makes you rigid and that is business suicide.

You need to stay at the edge of chaos

For example, Netflix deliberately and “unexpectedly” sabotages its own systems with the Chaos Monkey algorithm, which kills processes randomly. It haphazardly disables production instances to make sure that they can survive common types of failure without any customer impact. So, by being constantly under fire, its processes grow stronger. And the more frequently failure occurs, the more the organisation learns.

You need to know the the clock speed of your company

The phrase “Here today, gone tomorrow” has been replaced by “ Here today, gone today. There is an accelerating external clock. So he asks the key question. “What is the internal clock speed of your company?” How fast does it cope with change? Inside your organisation, how quickly does an idea evolve from a brainstorm into a marketable service or product? Internal clock speed itself is irrelevant nowadays. All that matters is whether you’re moving faster than your market: Is your internal clock outpacing the external clock?

You have to find your hidden innovation network

The first thing most large companies will have to do is to rediscover their hidden innovation network and unlock its potential. Industrial Age structures, mechanisms, and strategies aren’t helping them win the hearts and minds of networked workers and customers.

You need to unfreeze your own thinking first

For anyone in a large corporation, in an Industrial Age construct, we wish you all the best in unfreezing your company, your structures, and, perhaps most important, your own thinking. Bookbuzz can help you do that.

Bookbuzz MBA in day

We will be covering this book at the upcoming Bookbuzz MBA in a day. Your opportunity to get a full overview of the latest business thinking from hundreds of the latest business books. Book here.

Award Winning – What’s the Point?

This was my thought process prior to today – what is the point of awards and do they really benefit my business? I have seen many businesses flaunt their award winning this and their award for that and even some businesses who claim that they are award winning without stating what their award is for.

Well I have now joined the ranks of the award winners myself – not for export, not for sales and not even for the amount of businesses I have grown. This wonderful scene on the left is the winner of the Tourism NI Picture Perfect award for 2015!

Whilst not really relevant to the benefits I provide for my clients – it has changed my perception about them. It is my belief that benefits coming from awards fall into 2 main areas, independence and recognition.

Independence

Awards are really only of value if they come from an independent and reputable source – “employee of the week” or awards based on the size of your membership fee creates only scepticism and doubt over your product or service. But if your awarding body ticks the independence box it brings great credibility to your business.

Recognition

It’s great to be recognised and this was a major influence in my change of heart. I always believed I had “a decent eye” but when the judges chose my image, it confirmed my belief. You may believe your product or service is excellent but your potential clients are more likely to take someone else’s word for it. This recognition can also have a major influence upon your staff, building confidence and pride and these have a major impact on productivity.

Words of Warning

IMG_3827Awards are like my image – a snapshot, a moment in time and all because your product or service is award winning in 2015 there is no guarantee that it will be in the future. Plaques and certificates fade and gather dust and if left hanging around your receptions and marketing material without being up to date will lose their effectiveness and lustre. So if you are not striving for those awards annually make sure they don’t hang around as a sign post of past glory days.

So bring on the perfect picture award 2016!

As always I appreciate your comments, your feedback and the sharing of any of my blogs.

Reward to Retain: The Effects of Loyalty Schemes in the Insurance Industry

Three quarters of people would change insurers to a company offering the same product at the same price – as long as they gave them loyalty schemes too.

The figures were revealed in a major survey carried out by M&S for Business that looked into the way companies in the financial sector attract new customers – and keep them.

As well as surveying customers it spoke to insurance industry figures to try and discover what makes a successful acquisition and retention strategy.
While 95 per cent of respondents said price was one of the most important factors when deciding what policy to buy, only 55 per cent said price was the sole reason. It suggests that in such a competitive industry a loyalty or reward scheme to add value to a policy could improve chances of take-up.
Experts agreed and most insurers quizzed said they already ran some sort of reward scheme.

But the survey also revealed that almost half (45 per cent) of respondents did not know if their insurer offered a reward scheme or not.
It suggests that communicating the scheme on offer to customers is just as important as the scheme itself.

Increase Customer Acquisition

The report concludes: “Implementing a reward scheme for loyalty, referrals or signing up to an insurance policy is a great way to increase customer acquisition, retention and satisfaction. However, it is important that the offering is relevant to the individual and offered at the right time.

“Allowing customers to earn points and rewards makes them feel involved with your brand and gives them the feeling that your service is worth more than that of the competition. As with any relationship in life, the one between business and consumer needs to be nurtured and approached delicately.

“That is why research and planning are imperative to the success of a reward scheme. If you get it right, you can build relationships and create brand advocates who will stay with you for a lifetime.”

Encourage Customer Retention

Stuart Lawrence, Head of M&S for Business said: “We know that the insurance industry is one of the sectors where it can be most difficult to encourage customer retention. With insurance usually being an annual purchase and most people hunting for the best priced policies, it can be hard for an insurance company to offer a unique service.

“With this in mind, we have carried out some research to discover what qualifies as a successful customer acquisition and retention strategy within the industry and found that reward schemes are something that is seen as value for a customer.

“We feel that the results of this research are transferable to other sectors within the financial industry and provide an interesting insight into a customer’s perception.”

Top Ecommerce Tips To Implement For Better Online Customer Experience

Quality goods are no longer sufficient to stay competitive in the digital era. Nowadays consumers have many buying options to choose from and tend to stay loyal to the brands that provide exceptional customer experience. According to Forrester, 73% of consumers would like to buy more where they had a positive customer experience. What exactly you can do to win customers and improve relationships with customers across the entire customer journey? What kind of new tools you can incorporate into your business processes to achieve higher level of customer satisfaction and increased up-selling opportunities? Read on for some Top Ecommerce Tips…

To stay competitive, you should craft strategies taking into account what is trendy and upcoming.

If you are not aware of the emerging trends in the ecommerce field, here are some suggestions to help you revise the basics to achieve superior customer support experience for your online store:

Software for managing online communities

One of the most cost-effective ways of strengthening relations with customers is to build active and supportive community of brand advocates. Online community software solutions can help brands to build and manage their communities online. Such web-based tools, like www.getsatisfaction.com can help you facilitate the conversations between brands and customers, provide a more engaging support experience, build better products reviews, increase SEO and, finally, improve customer loyalty.

Combination of big data and CRM

Another trend to watch for in the ecommerce space are tools that help companies examine the large volumes of data to help them in making data-driven decisions. When taking into consideration customer data, big data refers to large amounts of either transactional data or analytical data. With the help of CRM the information can be structured in various ways for the different purposes: design, pricing decisions or demand forecasting. Ecommerce businesses struggle to make sense of big data because of its volume, the speed in which it should be collected and the great variety of channels it encircles. While big data technology is cheaper due to the open source tools, main spending is connected to CRM implementation to collect and analyze a complex data. The CRM solution is required to have powerful data collection capabilities as well as the ability to get the information from different sources, like bpm’online CRM does.

Multiple sales channels

Nowadays customer browsing is not limited to a single website so ecommerce business owners can consider setting up multiple storefronts to get new clients and better manage customer service. The idea is to welcome customers from multiple channels, building sites for the different target audiences.  When online stores are ready to create multiple storefronts, www.shoppingcart1.com can be an example of the software solution that support multiple storefronts.

Free Return

Free shipping has always been appealing for online shoppers. Now free shipping and free return is a proven tactic to turn buyers into repeat customers. Amazon.com was the first store who offered free shipping and return as part of their loyalty program, but in most cases, the consumer still has to pay for return shipping. Offering free return shipping is one of the hottest ecommerce trends, which is becoming popular now among customers. If an online store can offer free returns, it can show the customers not only the confidence about the products, but also the flexibility and great attitude towards customers.

Online shopping has been growing and retailers should look for new reasons to attract shoppers to spend more. As technology continues to rapidly evolve, ecommerce business might employ more sophisticated tools and facilities to make online shopping a lot more efficient and engaging for their customers.

The Gig Economy:To Gig Or Not To Gig?

Entrepreneur Anonymous

I had the pleasure of moderating a panel session at entrepreneur anonymous about the gig economy. So I did some research. The USA, UK and Dutch figures are very interesting.

Figures USA

In the USA the number of free lancers is 53 million. That is 34% of the USA labour market. Intuit estimates that this proportion will grow to some 40% by 2020. A 2015 survey of over 1,000 American workers noted that about 60% received 25% or more of their income from freelance work. It is a $715 billion market in the USA.

Figures UK

There are 1.4 million British freelancers working across all sectors. This has grown 14% in the past decade. It is a £ 21 billion market in the UK. Apparently 50% of people in the UK want to start their own business. Only 1 in 20 do. Which I think is tragic.

Holland

In Holland, the revenue commissioners only defined “freelancers” in the 80s. In 1988 there were 1800 of them. Now it is a 1.1 million and growing. That is 1 in 6 of the total Dutch labour market. In the 90s it was 1 in 17.

Jobshift

In 1994 William Bridges wrote “Jobshift” and predicted fundamental shift in the labour market. He talked about the cake layer model of the labour market, with a winner takes all at the top and the rest serving the top earners. He has not been far off.

The future is entrepreneurship

In my view there is no question that the labour market is shifting. And that the future is entrepreneurship. As an entrepreneur on the labour market or as entrepreneur running their own business. The reasons I belief that is because of “Jobshift”, but also books such as Lynda Graton’s “Shift” and the must read “Antifragile”

Job security does no longer exist

Company life cycles are getting shorter and shorter. Professor Richard Foster estimates that by 2020 more than three-quarters of the Fortune 500 will be companies that we have not heard of yet. Which suggest that job security does no longer exist, that we are all becoming portfolio workers and will be forced to change jobs on an ongoing basis.

Skynet is near

“The second machine age”  predicts that 70% of all current jobs will disappear an that robots and IBM’s Watson will take over. Skynet is near and job security is an illusion.

Pension as an argument?

You will also live longer. If you belief in exponential change in health and technology, we all live to be far over a hundred. That is a long career and it will fundamentally change the current pension system. It will collapse. In my view the “security” of a pension is also an illusion.

Your choice

The choice is whether you decide to be in control of your own destiny, or have a someone else (your manager) decide your faith. My belief is with Ken Robinson, Seth Godin and Chuck Blakeman

Build a long term family business

Entrepreneurship, following your passion and your heart and building a sustainable business. And if you are smart you examine the German way of doing business and you create a family business that creates multi-generational long term wealth.

Lots of questions

It raises a lot of questions. The definitions of gigger, freelancer and entrepreneur. I am not sure if they are the same thing. Is it for everybody? Will you have a choice? What about job security? Getting a mortgage? Your retirement? Your ongoing professional development? Stress, your health and dealing with financial insecurity?

I Belief

I belief (I am ware I have used “belief” already 3 times and yes, for me entrepreneurship is a religion):

  • That financial institutions will respond to this a € 660 billion market opportunity in USA and UK alone (look at what RBS is doing with ESPark and that is just the beginning).
  • That the sharing economy will make it easier to sweat personal assets in so many ways, that we will all become at least giggers and have income streams on the side.
  • That the gig, freelance economy will grow faster then most of us expect.
  • That a race to the bottom is a real threat.
  • That is could create a winner takes all society.

Which is why I think/belief that basic income will become a reality.

The only question

The only question is how far you will push this, how secure you think you are at the moment (NOT) and how much control you want to take of your own destiny. At entrepreneurs anonymous I pontificated that I regard myself as a failed parent if my children (Alice and Luca) do not become entrepreneurs.

What do you think?

Beating Distraction at Work: Top 7 Tips for Staying Super Focused

Have you been feeling uninspired at work lately?

Are you finding it arduous to meet the tasks at hand effectively?

Five minutes of distraction and bam! You are left with no idea about where you left off. There goes your productivity down the drain. When you look at your colleagues, you can’t help but wonder how they get so much work done in one day.

According to research, nearly 50% of American employees work only 15 minutes before becoming distracted at the office, while 53% report wasting an hour or more a day because of disruptions.

From constant background noises and overflowing inboxes to feeling exhausted and overloaded – these are just a few of the things that can cause people to lose focus.

However, you can work on staying more productive and getting most out of each day.

Wondering, how to go about it?

Here are a few ways that can help you stay sharp and focused at work.

1. Declutter and Get Organized

Organize your work desk in order to be more focused and flow in the zone.

That family photograph or the box of chocolates can be big distractions and muddle your focus at work. Don’t let these visual distractions divert your attention. Have only what’s necessary on your desk such as your laptop, work diary and other essentials. Don’t forget your water bottle.

Moreover, make sure to neatly pile them on your desk and ensure that they are within your arm’s reach.

2. Break down Big Tasks into Manageable Chunks

A scientific fact suggests that the human brain can only be attentive on a limited amount of information, for a limited period of time.

Handling a huge project can be overwhelming and difficult. ‘Work till you drop’ shouldn’t be the mantra to follow here. In fact, the smartest thing to do would be to plan first, develop strategies and split up the project into small chunks. This way you will be able to accomplish your tasks effectively and on time.

For instance, let’s say you are an agency named Charlotte Web Design and you provide a myriad of web design services. If you’re planning to work on the content of your website, then first plan and list the subjects you plan to write on. Avoid doing everything simultaneously. Go step-by-step.

3. Schedule Email Check and Social Media Sites

According to a survey, 60% of disruptions are caused due to disturbances from cell phones, emails, and social networks. It is best to limit your use of social media sites when at work, lest you should end up thinking about futile matters. Moreover, staying away from them will provide you uninterrupted time to work efficiently.

You’ll be able to remove a majority of distractions by scheduling your email check and use of social media websites. You will, therefore, be able to accomplish your goals sooner than you may have expected.

4. Make To-Do Lists

So, what are the things that need to be accomplished today?

Ask yourself this question before you begin to work and make a to-do list. This way you will be able to stay on track through the day and won’t end up wasting your time figuring out your tasks. A to-do list will provide you with more clarity on your routine tasks.

Ensure to work on the most difficult and challenging tasks during the first-half of the day as that is the period when one feels relatively fresh and energetic.

5. Take Small Breaks and Prevent Procrastination

Of course, you don’t want your brain to burn out. It makes sense to take small breaks between your tasks. Taking more breaks is synonymous with being more productive. However, this doesn’t mean you spend a major chunk of time taking breaks.

Wondering how taking small and quick breaks can help you?

Breaks tend to allow us to regroup our thoughts and focus our attention on the task at hand. Moreover, they help freshen up our mind.

Also, it’s important that you work on one task for a specific period of time. Assign deadlines to the tasks. They will help you stay motivated and focused on your tasks. Moreover, this way you won’t procrastinate, thereby keeping the project humming.

6. Use Technology to Your Advantage

Using social media sites frequently can hinder productivity to a huge extent. However, in several cases where the right technology and software is used, it can work the other way round.

Collaborating technologies like Yammer and Jive Software and communication services such as Skype and Google Hangouts can help you solve problems and complete projects at a relatively rapid pace. To-do list applications such as Evernote and Wunderlist can help you jot down tasks and prioritize them based on your required criteria.

Make sure to use the right software and applications to boost your productivity.

7. Put on Headphones and Get Some Coffee

Continuous and loud background noises at work can make your mind wander. In order to prevent this, consider listening to music while working. Good music can help you stay focussed, motivated and help you sustain your focus through the day. However, make sure that you choose the kind of music that will help increase your output and doesn’t work the other way round.

Want to know another way to increase your alertness at work?

Coffee can be your answer. A little burst of caffeine can amp up your productivity to a great extent.

Conclusion

It is common to be surrounded by a plethora of events and people throughout the day at work. This can, however, distract you and make you lose focus from the task at hand. By following the above-mentioned tips, you will be able to keep distraction at bay and stay productive all day long. It is important for you to be passionate about your work, know your priorities and stick to them. So, what are you waiting for? Implement the above tips in your daily routine, prevent slacking off, and stay super focused.
