Leading Global Ambiton – Women In Business NI Conference

As over 300 business women gathered at the Hilton Hotel Belfast, Ulster Bank were proud to be the key sponsor of the 7th annual Women in Business NI conference. The MC for the day, broadcaster Claire McCollum, introduced WIBNI chair, Kate Marshall who welcomed the attendees and outlined the global ambition and leadership theme to the delegates.

As key sponsor of the conference, Ulster Bank’s Ellvena Graham outlined the ways in which Ulster Bank supports women, both in and out of the bank, including; Women In Touch, Business Women Can and key sponsorships.

The first keynote speaker at the event was Rosaleen Blair, CEO of talent acquisition and management solution company, Alexander Mann. From selling perfume in her garden as a 7 year old, to offering to meet clients at their offices, (not mentioning it was because she had no desk in her own office!), Rosaleen has always possessed an entrepreneurial streak.

Sharing her leadership thoughts, Rosaleen commented ‘as a leader you cast a long shadow’. You set an example for your staff and fundamentally impact on organisational culture. Rosaleen is a great advocate of supporting others in business; great people will find the time to support you. Coaches and mentors are important and a sponsor is great and makes room for you at the table. Don’t be afraid to find one.

Next up, Pete Boyle founder and CEO of jewellery business, Argento, shared his unique entrepreneurial journey.

It was a random act of kindness, paying a friend’s bill, that gave him his first taste of business, when he was repaid in mirrors and realised he could sell and make a profit. Pete established Argento’s reputation for quality and treating his suppliers well, building up a good name and running a sound business, this includes Pete’s attitude to always paying his suppliers on time, if not early. This approach, he believes, allowed him to become Pandora’s largest supplier in UK.

Imparting some advice to the delegates, pride has no place in business and when realising an error, Argento took action and changed and the business continues to evolve with time, keeping close to their customers.

Following Pete’s session, Joan Ballantine from University Ulster shared ‘where are we with gender equality’, through the findings of a project they are currently undertaking, which looks at barriers, enablers and best practice in the public sector of Northern Ireland.

A panel of leading business women, including Ulster Bank’s Shauna Burns and broadcaster Terry Prone shared their experiences and tips to the audience- how they started out, where they are now and what their ambitions for the future are.

Closing the first session, Finance Minister Arlene Foster recognised the importance of women in Northern Ireland’s economy. The first session of the WIBNI conference was followed with refreshments and break out mentoring markets. Look out for more on the second half of the conference…

Queens University: Dragons Den

Lights, Camera, Action…..Queens University: Dragons Den

Head of Mid-Ulster and Fermanagh Business Centre Shauna Burns recounts her recent experience as a judge on Queen’s University’s Dragons Den, where enterprising local students faced a grilling as they pitched for new investment…

IT bench marking for the agriculture sector; concierge for the nomadic digital community; medical diagnostic devices ; chargers for electric cars – these were just a few of the ideas from Northern Irelands brightest young students at the final of QUB Dragons Den last week.

The basement of Elmwood Hall was transformed into a film set just like the real Dragons Den, with the 11 final businesses pitching for £5,000 investment. Myself and the other Dragons, Philip Bain (Director, Shredbank), Nancy Brown (business consultant and entrepreneur), John McKee (Chief Executive, Linkubator),and David Bradshaw (Client Executive, Invest Northern Ireland) were given an insight to the future. We saw not just students with ideas but with ambition and with products that were ready for the market.

It was truly inspiring to see that the future of Northern Ireland economic growth is in the hands of people with such diverse and innovative ideas. I believe that all of them will become leading entrepreneurial figures and business people of the future.

Winner: SleepState Labs

As judges we faced a tough decision as the standard was so high but ultimately we decided on one winner – SleepState Labs who won the full £5k investment for their sleep detecting mobile application. Each finalist also received 12 months business accommodation at QUB, which will hopefully enable them to evolve their businesses..

Across Northern Ireland, Ulster Bank encounters many new and exciting business ideas and one of the refreshing challenges I find is helping turn those ideas into reality. Our dedicated start-up proposition is a great tool to help us do this, and this has given me even more motivation to get out and support local enterprise.

Improve your business by using ancient mind techniques

The explosion of research and indeed the apparent exponential growth in universities from all round the world publishing papers on the benefits of practising meditation, mindfulness and what some call ‘calm’ is wonderful opportunity for all of us.

Our brains

This together with the ever increasing availability of evidence and understanding of how our brains actually work through popular acceptance and interest in neuroscience proves beyond doubt that there is direct improvement in functioning as a result of regular practice. All of this gives us legitimate permission and I do mean permission because as we know so many people – in fact maybe the majority of folks seem to need proof even empirical data and evidence that what we do will work before venturing forth.

Magic

Magically, at the same time there are those who are less inclined to need all this and who are even much more confident with more spiritual explanations for what its all about, but nevertheless it still works wonders for them too. So wherever people are on that continuum you can be sure that you will gain all manner of benefits that otherwise would not come to you if you choose to practice with your tools or better still attend one of our up and coming events to get some more. In MindStore we say “it only works” and it has been doing so for over 25 years while it continues to evolve and grow no matter what explanations are postulated for why.

Spiritual not technical

That said, to be honest I can swing in either direction in-terms of explanations though I am more inclined to sit towards the spiritual emphasis. However I have to say that I thoroughly enjoy my smart TV and what it can do, likewise my iPhone and since I was 18 driving around in cars. Each of these things that have continued to evolve and have become central to my life I don’t have a clue about how they work. I’ve got techie friends and a petrol head mate who do and seem love reading about what’s happening under the bonnet or behind the screen. However I can’t be bothered even spending a minute with this, however I absolutely respect their passion for doing so and wish them well with it.

Alpha state

I am much more interested in what you and I can do with it all because that’s just  how I am. So for all these years I have been exploring what can be done in the alpha state, how far can I push myself and what kind of tools and programs will help people change their lives for the better? However there has never been a better time to own up to being an enthusiast and for encouraging your colleagues at work or indeed family or friends to take a closer look. Both they and you will certainly benefit from doing so and that empirically is a fact. Like never before has there been such an open willingness in folks to want to know and indeed learn about how to practice and improve with this kind of stuff.

Mindfulness

With newspapers, magazines and endless other sources people will certainly have heard of “mindfulness” which is a word that covers all sorts of possibilities and it’s certainly increasingly becoming more mainstream. So no there’s no need for any of us to get embarrassed or be shy to say that we practice meditation type techniques. After all they are now without question proven to improve all manner of aspects of our lives. After 25 years pedigree and all those companies and leading figures not to mention thousands of success stories  with our House on The Right Bank or Island have as much credibility as anyone else in this field and probably much more.

Many tools and techniques for improving personal and group performance

It’s also becoming much easier for me to teach more advanced material too, even to beginners, because the sceptical resistance is melting away and there is a genuine hunger to have as many tools and techniques for improving personal and group performance. Quite simply – it’s just normal now and it’s even beginning to look like not having access will limit folks opportunities especially in their careers.

Bruce Lee

Think for a moment of the folks around you at work, your neighbours and of course family and friends who are moving through this life that is all too short but who still don’t have the range of tools and techniques we have that absolutely give us proven advantages. However, as I say repeatedly “it’s not enough to get this intellectually” we only have the added potential if we actually do it. Bruce Lee said “Knowing is not enough we must apply, willing is not enough we must do.” I know without doubt that the vast majority of “graduates” of MindStore programs have no doubt about the benefits of practising but it’s remembering to do it that is the challenge.

I also know that having people around you who are “graduates” too is more inclined to make it the thing to do, and as a result everything associated with MindStore begins to dramatically improve.

Whether people feel the need to mitigate and free themselves from the downside of modern life or are more inclined to want to unlock the upside and achieve much more of their potential then now is the time to get to it.

Is stress and anxiety part of your day to day life or do you suffer from poor sleep?

So is stress and anxiety part of your day to day life or do you suffer from poor sleep? are you inclined to have headaches? tend to feel overwhelmed at times? or are unable to hold your attention or have a general sense of uncertainty and helplessness? there is no doubt that that’s increasingly the norm especially with most folks working longer and harder. Someone has to be making up the statistics of 70% of doctors visits being stress related and spare a thought for the 1/3 of workers in the city of London for example who are reported to be suffering from mental health complaints. If that’s what is going on than MindStore can tackle it and provide much more besides.

On the other hand we are able to enjoy deeper sleep, more self-control, compassion, focused attention, a better quality and more useful decisions, enhanced emotional intelligence, improving relationships with more self-awareness through more empathy and compassion. MindStore promises a much more authentic you with a brighter outlook, more energy and much more fun.

Active approach

Our approach in itself is not a passive method, one of reaching a state of absolute stillness and quietude, though that is very special in its own right. Our entire approach which does include the peaceful state is actually a dynamic meditative method providing enhanced thinking where all our facilities come together empowering us to achieve way beyond that which is possible rather than if you go about things without our methods, tools and techniques.

I am finding that by and large there are two camps emerging in first time attendees or in in-house events and with conference audiences. First, there is a sizeable portion that do need the security and back up of knowing that science and research is right behind it all and has an abundance of data proving without doubt all the beneficial claims of this overall movement. When I started I was a pioneer in the UK facing huge cultural blocks that I had to slowly chip away at but that has all changed over time.

The Field of Pure Potentiality

On the other hand there is a growing acceptance and belief in the notion of a higher self, higher intelligence, universal consciousness or what Deepak Chopra calls “The Field of Pure Potentiality.” Many more are comfortable with the notion that when we find our way into the meditative state that there is a kind of “connectedness” or “inter-connectedness” with a higher power or communal wisdom. Indeed there is a growing acceptance of the ideas around spirituality anyway, even in hard business settings and that explaining all the benefits form this place is as valid as relying on the scientific and empirical evidence coming from academic research.

The scientists and the philosophers can’t prove or disprove what each are saying about consciousness itself but they do accept that it exists. Maybe it’s enough to have the desire to improve on what we are doing with it and for me probably more important than explaining what it is one way or the other. I have definitely witnessed extraordinary change and improvement in those who seek “to do” and “apply.”

Bring this to your business

We are now bringing these techniques to businesses as well. Hence the Business Master class in Dublin  on 12 June.

Keep Smiling

Calling all Innovators & Entrepreneurs, we need your help & your green VOTE !!

As with any Irish technology company, we all suffer unique challenges when growing business internationally. As a country we have a small population so we struggle when trying to make as much noise as our International competitors. Even places we assume are tiny states such as Haiti & Togo have twice and three times our population.

Hence we need your help…

One of our company’s, Surface Power HONE which has developed a revolutionary “daylight” powered Nano-heat engine technology is short-listed (final 18 was judged by experts) for the 2Degrees Champions Award –  “Innovation of the Year” which is the world’s leading collaboration platform and service for sustainable business with over 46,500 members from 177 countries. https://www.2degreesnetwork.com/

Surface Power HONE has nearly 7,000 installations of this patented technology over 8 countries to date and it has been kept fairly secretive until recently. The technology was field tested in the West of Ireland & New Zealand as the daylight levels are some of the lowest in the OECD. In short, it replaces the use of oil and gas for heating and cooling with free daylight. Have a look at LIVE customers on our website such as the UK National Health Service running their hospital’s central heating on free “daylight” (sounds mad but true !!)

The next phase of the 2Degrees “Innovation of the Year Awards” is a voting stage which will reduce the final 18 to 5 for the big awards ceremony and we need your help and your vote.

Although already in the short-list of 18, we are the only Irish Technology company in this shortlist and are up against huge players such as Nestle, General Motors & B&Q.

You can vote for us by clicking the link below to get us into the final 5 and we thank you in advance for that vote. Be sure to tweet it afterwards using the link so we can personally send you a thank you tweet. Go raibh maith agat as do chabhair.

Best Regards, John Quinn, CEO. (Twitter – @johnquinn_irl )

Future proof your business at #Bizpartyinspires conference

Irishbizparty conference

On 15 April I have the pleasure of speaking at the #IrishBizparty conference in Dublin. I have been an admirer of Samantha Kelly for quite a while. First time I met her was in the house of one of the dragons, when she had started Funky Goddess and got the investment.

I am a Sam fan

Since then she has gone from strength to strength. She has written a book, is on TV and has created a number of communities, including #irishbizparty. As one of the founders of Smallbusinesscan, I can assure you, that is no mean feat.

Therefore I was delighted she asked me to speak at the Dublin conference.

Future proofing your business

My topic for the day is future proofing your business. Future trends is what we do a lot with Bookbuzz. When you talk to small businesses, I am always amazed on how trend watching is not on the radar. Granted, I read too much science fiction, but to stay in business, you need to be aware. To strategise and to know where you are going, you need context. Trend watching gives you that context and a picture of the place of your business in that future.

If you don’t recognise the names below, I would argue, that you are in trouble,

  • Richard Watson
  • Ray Kurzweil
  • Jason Silva
  • Faith Popcorn
  • Chris Anderson
  • Naseem Taleb
  • Brian Solis
  • Ken Robinson
  • Seth Godin

Not to worry, on the day, I will walk you through some of the key concepts that these business experts talk and write about and will give you some tools to help you make sense.

Hope to see you there and hope to be as inspirational as Samantha.

Business Women Can Event – Navigating Social Media

Following on from a very successful event in November on the topic of “Building Your Leadership Profile”, the Ulster Bank Business Women Can Dublin contingent held another event as part of the “Inspiring Your Success” series on Thursday 12 February. The purpose of the Business Women Can initiative and events is to support women in business across all sectors and professions.

The topic for this gathering was “Building Your Profile Online – Navigating Social Media”. Those in attendance were in for a real master class of helpful hints and tips when it comes to the sometimes intimidating world of social media.

The event was well organised by two of Ulster Bank’s Business Women Can Ambassadors, Lisa Raftery and Gillian O’Neill. After a bit of breakfast and a lot of networking, Lisa opened the event by welcoming all in attendance, and did admit when bringing the “Tweeter’s” attention to “#BusinessWomenCan” that she had only just found out what a “Twitter Handle” was. Gillian then introduced the very high calibre of speakers that were there to share their valuable insights into using social media.

The Speakers

Ron Immink of Ulster Bank Small Business Can fame, along with a long list of other accolades to his name, was the first speaker to address us. Ron shared lots of nuggets of information and insights with the group. He reminded us that social media makes companies very transparent, and that reputation is everything. Ron spoke about how difficult it is for hotels as an example to succeed in business after terrible ratings on Trip Advisor, and in Ron’s own words how social media can be “word of mouth on steroids”. The key “take aways“ from Ron for me was give social media a go, try one channel to start with, make sure you have some content to offer to people and you can only learn by doing it…..so get going!

Ron was followed by Eva Maguire who is Head of Design and Innovation at the IMI. Eva took on the task of trying to educate us on “How to write a blog”. For this first time “blogger” the topic made me quite nervous about my assigned task for the day of writing a blog on the event for Business Women Can!! And Eva certainly had my undivided attention. Eva spoke to us about why to blog, and how to do it and shared 4 key elements of a successful blog, some of which I hope you can spot in this piece, being.

  • The Point of Interest – something specific you have seen.
  • The Trend – something people are talking about in general.
  • The Insight – your take on it.
  • And very importantly for us all to remember, “The Call to Action….”

Startup Stories

The third speaker of the morning was Jill Holtz who founded the online business “MyKidsTime” (http://www.mykidstime.com/). Jill shared her fascinating story of starting her own business, which started out as a directory for parents after she found herself chasing a group of girls dressed in ballet dresses down the road so she could find out where ballet classes were being held. The directory business then evolved into an EZINE and a Blog for parents, along with an online booking and payment service that has since been spun off into a separate business. Jill shared lots of dos and don’ts of social media with us, which she learned from first hand experience. She went on lots of social media platforms to begin with, but then realised that she needed to focus on one core method. Since implementing a social media strategy in 2012, that focussed on the use of Facebook MyKidsTime has attracted over 500,000 likes on Facebook and more importantly according to Jill, gets lots of user comments on Facebook. Jill left us with insight into her 5 key factors for success:

  1. Clear Business Objective
  2. Content Strategy
  3. Engagement Pieces
  4. Unique Brand Voice
  5. Constantly Measuring and Analysing

After our 3 speakers concluded a lively Q&A session commenced with questions and contributions from a wide range of people. Such was the interest and audience participation that Gillian O’Neill had to finally call proceedings to a close before all questions could be asked to allow us all get back to our day jobs.

If you would like to receive information on future Business Women Can events such as this one, please drop us an e-mail with your details to businesswomencan@ulsterbank.com, we would love to hear from you.

Terraclean Ireland

Every week we feature companies that have been successful in accessing funding from Microfinance Ireland.

Microfinance Ireland provides loans to small businesses and start ups in every sector up to 25,000 Euro. If you are interested in funding, check out the website www.microfinanceireland.ie

Terraclean Ireland

Terraclean is a unique decarbonising service which helps lower emissions, improves miles per gallon and restores engine performance. It is much better explained here:

Terraclean Ireland was set up by Cathy Kelly in 2012 and already has a network of 13 agents nationwide. Cathy applied for a loan to finance her expansion plans.

The market

There are 3.2 million vehicles in Ireland and Northern Ireland. People are keeping their cars longer, and need to spend more money on maintenance. Emmissions is now part of the NCT and MOT and can result in a “fail”. Apart from the private market, there is a business case for fleet owners and the motor trade and garages who are looking for more value add services for their clients.

The story, UK, Edd China and Ireland

TerraClean is the by-product of research being carried out by a group of environmentally conscious Canadian physicists in their attempts to create an ultra low emission internal combustion engine.

TerraClean launched into the UK professional automotive market at AutoSport International in early 2012. Edd China was attracted to the technology and the impact it claimed to have on engine performance, emissions and fuel consumption, he visited the stand and spent some time chatting to our engineers about the principles of the process.

Edd left the show interested in the product and later contacted Terraclean asking for help with a project car in a TV show he co-presents. Some of the Terraclean team travelled to Edd’s studio to provide a demonstration of its capabilities and for use in the show. Edd was extremely impressed with the results and decided it was perfect for use on the show’s project car.

After using the petrol machine Edd asked to have a personal demonstration of the diesel machine too. He operates his own vehicle workshop and invested in both machines for his own use.

Subsequent to the demonstrations and show use Edd has been using the machines himself and given the technology a firm thumbs up. He is now working with Terraclean to help promote the range of solutions and products which all help make; motorcycles, cars, vans, trucks & agricultural vehicles operate more efficient and environmentally friendly, restoring MPG and performance.

Since the product was featured on TV, enquiries from garage operators asking to become part of the distribution network, and from the public requesting details of where they can have there vehicle TerraCleaned, have increased massively.

In the UK there are now over three hundred agents and Cathy wants to expand in Ireland to about 30 agents.

Visit

The Terraclean service can be performed mobile and takes place approximately 1 hour to complete. Terraclean’s offices are located at Unit 15 Gorey Business Park, Ramstown, County Wexford.

You can visit their Facebook page here http://www.facebook.com/TerracleanIreland and their website here http://www.terracleanireland.ie/
